BOOKMAKERS AT WORK.
A NEWSPAPER'S COMMENT. [Br Trleubaph.— Special to Thk Post.l CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The first race meeting held in the neighbourhood of Christchurch sinco the. passage of the Gaming Act took placo at Hororata yesterday. Sixteen bookmakers were licensed by the club at a fee of £5 for tho inside enclosure, and £3 for outside. They did a large business, but in spite of this fact the totalisator investments increased from £1046 at the corresponding meeting last year to £1659. The Lytlelton Times, rof erring editorially lo tho reinstatement of the bookmakers, says : "As a matter of fact tho attractions of the racecourse to tho great majority of the public have been largely incroaecd by the admission of Iho bookmakers to assist the tote in 'improving the breed of horses,' and 'elevating tho character of tho sport,' and w« have littlo doubt that the experience of the Hororata Club will be the experience of other clubs, and that Iho volume of the betting on their courses will bo substantially increased."
