THE THIRSTY SUBURBS. WATER SUPPLIES.
Warm, dry weather and paucity of water tanks are reproducing an annual trouble on the high levels of Wellington, and out at Island "Bay. Tho city engineer's department is being worked at high pressure to meet the demands for connection with the recently-install-ed system of water supply at Island Bay, but both here and at Brooklyn there is trouble as a result of failure by householders to make their applications early enough. Had this been done some- time ago, many drouthy households at Island Bay would now be able to turn on water whenever they need it. Brooklyn premises are being connected with the water supply as fast as possible, and in regard to Kelburne the city engineer sees no cause to alter his original estimate that the water would be avu liable there in February next. Reticulation of that suburb has been begun already, and by the time the big pump arrives from England this work will be completed or thereabouts.

"Is it not a fact/ cried the ira<e examiner "that you have been laughing tit me for the last four weeks?" "Yes, and, perhaps, you've been scowling at him as you aro doing now" interjected Dr. M' Arthur. No order' was made. Debtor quickly left the court, followed almost immediately by the burly fuming creditor. Tho audience behind the Tail followed, expecting to see some fun, but the footsteps died away outside the court and nothing more was heard of the debtor and creditor.
