It is twenty-one years ago to-day sine* the. "Wcliington-Manawatu railway line was completed. Some days ago we drew attention to tho exposed state of the public baths at Te Aro, owing to a northerly gale having blown down the wooden breakwater which divides the baths from the harbour. Yesterday's breeze added some twenty feet more to the unprotected span, with the result that the men's section is now in a. large measure open to the sea. Since the wind and water made the first encroachment, a small staff of men has been engaged in effecting repairs, but their progress has been considerably retarded by unfavourable weather and tides ; and as a good deal of the work has to be done under water very little visible headway has been made with the undertaking. A3 the bathing season is now in full swing, it seems desirable that a large staff of men should be put on the job, at all events for the portions of each day when the wind and tide suit the carrying on of the work, as otherwise the baths will be in a dirty and disorderly state during the best part of the fine weather. The annual meeting of shareholders in the Taranaki Petroleum Company was held at New Plymouth yesterday, says a Press Association message. In discussion .is to whether the directors knew tho Birthday well was blocked, it transpired that the previous manager had been aware of it. The two retiring directors — Messrs. D. Berry and J. B. Roy — were re-elected without opposition. The sum of £150 was voted to the directors in recognition of their past year's services. The manager spoke confidently of the prospects, but declined to make any promises. A service in memory of the late Mr. S. W. Lpekwood will be held to-morrow night in ihe Donald M'Lcan-stree.l Primitive. Methodist Church. Young men's monthly service will bo hold at the Brooklyn Baptist Church tomorrow night. .
