EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly mooting of the Wellington Education Board was held thjs afternoon. Present — Messrs. W. Allan (chairman), Hogg, JI.H.R., Kebbell, Aitken, M.H.R., Vile, and M'Donald. The new member, Mr. Aitken, M.H.R., was formally welcomed by the board. The statement of finances was adopted/ the chairman remarking that the board's financial position was better now than it had been for many years. On a petition of the residents, Mr. Hogg moved that the resolution of the board re Mt. Cook latrines, passed on 25th July, be lescinded. After considerable discussion, the motion was lost by 4 votes to' 1. Among the new works authorised were the following : — Korokoro — Excavation and filling, £21 10s, and metalling, £20 ; Petone — Erection of new latrines, £130 ; Mount Cook infants — Five portable blackboard screens. £20.

When the Mayor of Feilding read the Premier's message about medals for school children yesterday (telegraphs our correspondent) comments were made : "It would be better if hegave us money to improve our roads :" " What about devoting the medal money to poor back blockers for roads?" The Wellington Provincial ' Executive ot the Farmers' Union met yesterday (telegraphs our Palmerston correspondent). The Organising Committee reported that satisfactory work was being done in several districts, and a fair number of members was being enrolled. The committee found its work hampered by insufficient funds at its disposal, and recommended striking a levy on a graduated scale, members with £1000 of capital value to pay ss, with Is rise for every additional £500 value. Mr. T. Humphries, Surveyor-General, is visiting the East Coast ports. A fancy goods sale ib being held at Mj. H. J. Hunter's, 69, Willis-street. Particulars are advertised in this issue. It is notified by advertieement that the daylight parade of No. 6 Company (Petone "Naval?] ,. caJled for tomorrow, has been postponed. At 2 o'clock to-morrow Messrs W H Morrah and Co. will sell by public auotion in their rooms, Willis-street, pawnbroker's unredeemed pledges, watches, jewellery, o.p. waje, etc. St. John's Church, Willis-street, which has been closed for four weeks for repainting and renovation, will be reopened on Sunday, when the fifty-fourth anniversary of the congregation will be commemorated. There will bo three services. The Row J. Gibson Smith will preach in the morning, and Dr. Gibb will preach in tho afternoon and evening. Mr. Joh. E. Liudbcrg, dropcr, Cubastreet, announces special prices for his sale to-morrow. Those interested in the games of cricket, croquet, tennis, will do well to inspect tho stock of Georgo Winder, ironmonger, corner Manners and Cuba streets. This year's shipments have now been opened up, and are offered at very low prices. — Advt.
