THE AMERICA CUP.

* . SIR T. UPTON'S CHALLENGE. IT IS DECLINED. SUGGESTED ALTERATION OF LIMIT RULE. By TeScgrapli.—Prees Association.— Copyright. (Received September 27, 8.18 a.m.) LONDON, 26th September. The New York Yacht Club has declined Sir Thomas Lipton's challenge for the America Cup, on tho giound that any proposal to limit the size of the competing boats would constitute a, violation of the terms of tho America Cup Trust. However, tho club is prepared to accept a challenge on the old lines. Sir Thomas Lipton is extremely disappointed, sinco ho challenged under the universal rulo which American yachtsmen established, and under which they, as experienced builders of a particular typo of boat, would have had a great advantage over inexperienced British builders. The Royal Irish Yacht Club, on behalf of Sir Thomas Liplon, recently issued a challenge for an America Cup contest in 1908. The first move towards a modification of the conditions by bringing the provisions of the deed into better line with the modern developments of the sport, was made over a year ago by Sir Thomas Lipton. At that timo the defenders and custodians of the cup, the New York Yacht Club, altered its own rule of measurement in accordance- with modern ideas, and Sir Thomas -wrote to ascertain what conditions would govern tho further contests for the cup. The only reply mado at that time was that the matter could not be discussed until a defiuito challenge had been lodged. Something very like a deadlock was thereby created, for tho leading designers of England were practically unanimous that under the old rule the defenders liad advantages which made it impossible for challengers on their side of tha Atlantic Ut pursue the contest with any hopo of success.
