TECHNICAL EDUCATION.
MEETING OF PETONE BOARD. Several matters of importance in regard to technical education in Pet'one wsre dealt with at last night's meeting of the Board of Managers of the- local Technical School. There were present : Messrs. Lodder (in the chair), Castle, Nicholson, Duncan, and Baldwin. PROPOSED NEW BUILDING. In further reference to ths proposal fo oroct buildings at Petone 'for the accommodation of school and technical Clowes, (he secretary of tho Education Department advissd that it was not apparent to the department that tho requirements of Petone in the way of manual and technical instruction called for an immediate expenditure by the Government of an amount represented by the estimated cost, namely £4125, of buildings on the lines of tho plans forwarded by the board • He was directed therefore to suggest that the^ plans should be amended with a view of providing suitable and necessary accommodation at a less cost. He enclosed for the-information of the Education Board and the managers some rough sketch plans, which it it was hoped might prove of assistance. It was estimated that suitable buildings of a plain but not necessarily inappropriate character, on the lines indicated therein, could be erected at a cost of about £3000 in eluding architect's f ees. The plans also gay« suggestions as to fittings for certain classes. The reeretary had further to sny (hat an application for a grant in the- neighbourhood of the amount mentioned, would, if (he accompanying plans were such as could bo approved by th? Minister, receive due consideration. The bonrd resolved lo forward "the department's sketch plans to Mr. F. de J. Chrc, who prepared the original plans, with a request that ho should if possible modify his plans to meet tho points made by the department. COOKERY CLASS. The Town Clerk (Mr. Alex. 'Webster) instructed by ihe> Borough Council asked the board to establish a cookery class. The council undertaking to supply a room, a cooker, and tho necessary gas free, of charge. It wns resolved to tnke advantage of tho offer if a sufficient number of intending pupils offered. MISCELLANEOUS. Enquiry was made by the Town Clerk as to whether the bonrd had any title to a, 6cclion of land in Beach-streot, as, failing a reply and payment of rntes, he must proceed to have the land sold by order of the Supreme Court. It was explained that tho land u-a* purchased with publicly subscribed money for the purpose of a, Boys' Institute and Technical School and was vested in two trustees, one of whom was -out of the colony. As the boavd expects to have the section handed over to it, it va- decided to have the matter deferred for a month pending tho return of the absent trustee. Mr. W. G. D. Evans, notified that the subscribers in the Railway Workshops to the Seddon Memorial Fund had nominated Mr. D. M'Kenzie as their representative on the board. It was reported that Mr. M'Kenzie's name had been forwarded to the departinnt for formal approval. The amount subscribed. £11 3s 9d, has been carried by tho board. j It wns resolved to carry on the plumb- j ing class I ill Christmas so that the pupils dinners in th? next examination would not be interfered with.
