TREATMENT GF INFANTS. TO THE EDITOR.
iSir, — In jour" report -with regard to tfie deputation from the Society for Pro. xj^oting the. Health of Women and Children/'wntch "waited the lion. J. INfcCJUK&an, ,Miiu'ster . feu- Justice, yester, day, it. appears that one of the • reason's given in asking for the cancellation of a certain license was that the home-keeper irould^oj; tsake the society's advice- to fSed "humanised milk to the children."' This is not correct. The^ condition of the children in the home, -'especially 'that of the infant, thfe general attitude and • demeanour of tL<; home-keeper, who, eeeing the baby goibg downhill, not declined emphatically to try something which might "fats expected to improve its condition, bui told us that she was taking only on& pint of milk a day, ■which she said wa& stare;! Tv tie tiroe children in hep touife -these facts /satisfied us that she lvaa not a fit person to have charge of infant's under the Act. '• While concentrating attention on the condition of the submerged, the <;luet aims of the eociety are apt to bo over* Ippked., _ .They are : — (1) To try by every possible means to bring about the natural feeding of babies ' in/ihe interests of mother, child, and State. {2) Where this is not possible, to pro. vide the substitute most nearly akin to Jsature's food, which is humanised milk. X am' glad to see that the Cbief Health <)fficsr in his report says : — "The schenio •vf eupplying humanised milk in D'incdin . . has been productive of very - great .good." And lie hopes it will be provided in. each of tho other centres. (3) To impress on all the necessity for fresh air day and night, plenty of sunshinej- good fcimple food, suitable clothinp, regular habits, exeicise, recreation, ami nest.',' If a child were ensured these simple requirements, along with kindly care and attention and a. reasonable education of mind and body at school. I feel sure that in the next generation there would he little need for aititicial feeding, and the ■\rhole community would he healthier, happier, and more capable. — I am, etc., AMY CAREW, Hon. Sec. Society for Promoting the Health ol Women and Children. Wellington, 23rd August.
