PALMERSTON'S WANTS.
, >o ■ '• — A deputation from Palmerston North consisting of the Mayor (Mr. R. Essex), the Borough Engineer, and several councillors, interviewed the Premier yesterday at the Parliamentary Buildings. They asked that the Government should fence the railway line on either side from Terrace End to the Square (down the main street of the toxvitf; "that' a piece of land near the public cemetery- should be vested in the council for the purposes of a footbath to the cemetery ; and the terms lipon which the Bailway Department would supply road metal from the iManawatu Gorge.- The deputation also asked for assistance towards protecting' the banks of the Manawatu River from further erosion. This is a matter which 'is "causing the ratepayers of the borough considerable anxiety just at present. The Premier in reply said he would give the various matters full qofosjdertrtron./ Pressure of business would prevent an, immediate reply. In legard to the protection of the river^" banks the ratepayers were obtaining a lcan-^or-yine purpose, and he was inclined to' favour the Government helping those who helped themselves .in matters of this kind.
