Tho damage is estimated at a quarter of a million sterling. A sudden phango of wind prevented the destruction of two million pounds' worth of property. Two thousand people have been rendered homeless. Twenty-iseven firemen sustained injuries. Coney Island is a part of Long Island, New York, stretching about seven miles from east to west, and situated about fivo miles from Brooklyn. It is the most popular watering-place of Now York city. On tho extreme west end of a sand-bar, it has a fine fctretch of beach about fivo miles long.
