LOCAL A$~D GENERAL. ■ * Appreciation of the action of the Government l^ refusing to send through the Post Office "communications addressed A o so-called medical specialists" was expressed by the Council of the Evangelical Churches at its meeting lust night. Appreciation was also Repressed of the action of city and country newspapers in refusing to publish adrci lisemenls from such people. A correspondent signing himself '"Walk Over" is advised to cultivate the art. of brevity. He writes at unnecessary length to correct a statement made by another writer, to the effect that tram tickets could be purchased iv Melbourne at the rate of twenty-four for two shillings. He states that the tramlines in the Vktoriancapital average five miles in length, with a fare of threepence for the ivliolo distance ; but if a concession is desired conductors will issue six tickets for a shilling, thus reducing ths fare- to twopence. Tickets entitling to eight rides for a shilling are also issued, available only within the town area. A poll of the evangelical churches of Wellington on the question as to altering the time of commencing Sunday evening &3wices from 6.30 o'clock to 7 has resulted in a large majority declaring in favour of 7 o'clock as the hour of starting the whole year through. The Council of the Churches resolved last night that the alteration bo given effect to on and after the first Sunday in September. While discussing tho question of providing land for local industries by reclaiming it from the sea at Evatts Bay, Councillor J. P. Luke- expressed himself— at yesterday's meeting of delegates from UiO'Lity Ccmncil and the Harbour Board —that if private people could get a right for all time to tlw .foresKore at Uvuiib Bay it would be built upon without delay. He- did not advocate that course, but fee knew it to bs a fact. Therefore it seemed to him that the local bodies could profitably undertake 'tho voile. The Hon. T. K. Macdonald thought it could be taken that from £20 to £25 a foot for water -frontages would be paid. The secretary of tho board <Mr. Ferguson) said 1 they must rememboT that there would! not be water frontage* for all; some blocks would bo backblocks. Mr. Macdonald said ho recognised that, but he took it that right of access to tho wa^er-front would be reserved ior all blocks. Mr. Ferßuson acquiesced. Mr. Macdonald thought it could be assumed for practical purposes that the manufacturers of the city would be prepared to go up to £4000 per acre. Mr. Luke said yes, but ho had not reckoned upon the undertaking being so expensive. That figure could be taken by the engineers as the maximum cost practicable so far as the. schemo was concerned. Tho sum of £4000 per acre abovs stipulated would include drainage, roads, and all other necessities, and tho rent tc be paid by the manufacturers would be' 'fixed upon tbat capital value,* provision, .being made for revaluation after a. term of y-3ars. The- expenditure of £600,000 on the Arthur's Pass tunnel spells prosperity for the Hokitika district (says the West Coast Times), and will no doubt more' than compensate for Qi& stoppage of tho Public Works at Otira. It means £2000 per week spent in tunnel construction lor the next five years, chiefly an labour, powder, and cement. To this add development of Paparoa ' coal, another £100,000, Blaekwater reefs, £70,003, Grey harbour works, perhaps £100,000, th* timber industry and general development, so that taken ull round there is a rosy future in store for the Co:ist. Already there is an extra sirring in the. walk of business people in anticipation of tho good times in store Apropos of the now trawling company about to be established in Duuedin-, our local correspondent telegraphs that £8000 out of £10,000 capital required is reliably promised. The great reorganisation sale will begin to-morrow (Wednesday) morning at nine o'clock precisely, when a diopfiil of bar- \ gains will be offered.- Kirkcaldie aud 'Stain*, Ltd.— Advt.
