SATURDAY'S MATCHES. ■The semi-finals matches fortho^second round of the senior championship were played at Day's Bay on Saturday. Tho state of the grounds and tWo weather were -such as to render good play out oi the No. 1' ground was a quagmire, and No. 2 was little, of any, better. % , , TJNITEDS ? v. VICTORIA" COLLEGE 0 The conditions being taken into account, howevor, 'this 'game was good. Some excellent passing rushes wero made by each team. The play generally was very slow, but tho ball was .hit about the field in what was quite a remarkable manner, on such a he>wy ground During the first quarter of o^i hour TJniteds were placed continually on the defensive; neverthelesSj though opportunities were not lacking,, tho Collcgs j f ailedto score. After about twenty minutes' play United came way, with a rush, which resulted in Elliott Eefore very long TJniteds obtained another goal.. The game, after this, assumed tho I form of an amusing practice. , Only one result of the game appealed to b,e possible; and, because the mud piWcntel anything approaching a good jonteet, a number of players on each side wero content to amuso themselves, in tho slush. The most remarkable player on the field was ' Martin Luckio, United's goalkeeper, who saved, very cleveily, ai least three goals. Tho judgment Luckie displayed in coming out to meet an rltacking opponent was quite noteworthy. All United's forwards did fairly well, arid Exley was prominent amoug their backs. Smith, Castle, and Popo wereconspicuous among the College forwards, whilst-Griffiths was the most noticeable back. KARCRI 6 v. VIVIAN 2. Like the above-mentioned game, this contest exhibited anything out good hockey. Tho Karori team lacked the services of Davies, Willis, and Harcourt. In the first spell, Karori had matters much their owli way; at half time the score stood at s—l.5 — 1. Vivian, however, made a very good stand in the second half of tho gamo. Each team in the second spell scored once; but the
goal obtained by Karori .was the outcome of » penalty bully right in front of Vivian's goal-posts. The'Karori forwards in tho first spell were too good for their opponents, but in the second half, 'their vigour disappeared. Donovan, j tho wing forward, was the most prominent player on the ground; he Is very , fast and clever. The' game, however, was not characterised by much conspicuous play. ■ LADIES' MATCH. Victoria College 2 v. Kiwi o.—This, match created considerable interest. " In spite of the weather quite a number of spectators went out to see tho contest. The Kiwis had an unbeaten record, for four or five years, and it was recognised that the College had a very strong eleven. The previoc* match between these two teams was very close, Kiwi winning by one goal. The College played an exceptionally fine game.. Kiw.is fought stubbornly for victory, but on Saturday's play met a bettor .team. These two clubs are now equal for tho first place in the senior championship. JUNIOR. , Victoria College By.
