-o CARRENO. On Monday evening .tfadarne Teresa Carreno, the pjani^tic celebrity whom Herr Scherek has brought to New Zealand, will givo her first recital at tho Town Hall. It is an event which should secure the substantial support of musiclovers generally as well as the merely cuiious-minded, who will scarcely care to miss an opportunity of hearing ono of tbo lnoct talented, players of the world. The programme- is suited to al! tastes. It includes tho popular "Appassionata" sonata of Beethoven, Chopin's Prelude Op. 23 and rolonaise in A flat," Liszt's transcription of Paganini's "La Curnpanelh," and Liszt's great "Rhapsodic Hongroiss No. 6." Theso numbers should rnabla Madame Carreno to display to the best advantage her re-nm-hable genius, ns a pianist. The plan of reserved seats is open at the Dresden. "BLOW FOR BLOW." A. four-act comedy, "Blow for Blow," is to be produced by the Thorndon Dramatic • Society at the Opera House on Wednesday and Thursday next. The rehearsals of the piece have been very' successful, and a first-dats performance is expected. Special music for tho piece has been written by Mp. Percival Clarke. Seats may be bookedat the Dresden. MONTGOMERY'S ENTERTAINERS. Mr. J. E. Petherick is once more in Wellingt.qp, as representative of Mr. Ednmnd Montgomery and his organisation, who commence a fortnight s seaton in the Opera House on Saturday next, 3rd August. Tho principal attraction "-will be a complete Edison pictorial representation of Wagner's operadrama of "Parsifal,"' as produced in New* York. Another item of interest will be the /All Black" football tour— a series of pictures taken on the ground by Mr. W. West, "the New Zealand rights of which, havo been secured by Mr. Montgomery. At this week's meeting of the Wesley'an Literary and Debating Society the Rev. B. P. Blamiz'cs gave an interesting lecture on- his recent visit to the v.d Country and the Continent, Canada, the United Slates, and the Holy Land. There wa& a large attendance at tho t/w-slfth annunl ball organised by the ijicinbcra of tho Royal New Zealand Artiliery, and held last night in the Tojvn Hall. Tho beautiful decorations and tha bright colours of the uniforms worn by the military men -made the cpectaele \ c brilliant one. Last night tho Webb street Primitivo Methodist Mutual Improvement Society ■ had a Parliamentary Evsning. Mr. J. j liomaß acted as Premier, and_Mr. \Y. J. Gray as Leader of tho Opposition, iur. 11. Thomas (Minister for Justice) introducod an Anti-Gambling Bill for tho abolition of the tptalisator and the suppression of lotteries. The measure was fully and ably discussed. Tha weekly meeting of the V.M.C.A. Literary and Debating Society was held last evening, Mr. C. E. Dowland occupied tho chair, and there was a good attendance of members. The evening was devotsd to impromptu speeches on current topics. An "InKloside" in connection with tho Scottish Lowlands' Society wac held in the Druids' Eall lasb ovening. The major portion of ths programme consisted of dancing, but songs were rendored by Mrs. Rait and Mr. J. M'Lean, and pipo music was played by Messrs. Baillio, Shannon, Frost, and Scott. Miss H. Morris played" tho accompaniments, find Mr. A. ■Willi-iPis provided the dance music. Tho M.C.'s for iho evening were Messrs. D. Logan, M'Millan, and Jaffray, and tho arrangements wero carribd out by the secretary, Mr. J. Morris. At jhe weekly meeting of the members of the junior department ofc tho V M.C.A. there was an attendance of xO6 lads. On ■ this occasion the meeting was in chargo of tho physical work branch, Mr. YE.V E. M. Ryan (as convener) and the threo members of th© committee (Mastei-s.G. Wilkins, Robt. i'arton^ and Roqald Milne). The proceedings opened with a, pianoforte solo by Master Weari Baker, followed by' sphere swinging by Mr. Frank Rogcrsi recitations by Masters Raymond Baker and Rainston Rex. Coci) 'Sherwood contributed a song, and there wore a number of displays by nine lads of tho gymnasium — Masters W. Urquharfc, R. Baker, N. Macpherson, P. Milne, W. Hughes, E. Gibbons, F. Bevan; E. Hayes, and Graham Shannon. Mr I . ' Wi Eglin presented to Maatcr Charlie "Beaumont a medal tor winning the learners' race ia last season's swimming.
