A SCOW WRECKED.
6 SERIOUS LOSS OF LIFE FEARED. ONE SURVIVOR. [BY TELEGBAPII. — PRESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, 23rd July. A telegram from Tairua states that a messenger from Ohui (lUf miles from Auckland) has just ridden over and reported that' the scow Surprise (79 tons) went ashore on the rocks about a mile from the north end of Ohui beach, and is a total wreck. The captain, mate, and two seamen are' supposed to be drowned. A filth hand — Harry W. Jackson, of Norfolk Island' — got ashore and found his way to Ohui, wher-a he is being looked after by Mr. James M'Gregor. He is badly knocked about, and rambles a little in his talk, but is expected to be well in a day or two. From what can be gathered from the imperfect account of the disaster given by Jackson, the scow dragged her anchors right from Slipper Island, and went ashore on tho coast early on Sunday jaorning. On 23th June the crew of the Surprise comprised the following :—: — J. Jalliere, master. A. Stewart, 19 years. E. Johansen, 19 years. W Kelly, 17 years. H. W. Jackson, 20 years. Ca »tain Jallier© was taken on jn place ot Ctptain R. W. Cliffe, who was sick, when the vessel was in Auckland last. Johansen and Kelly signed on wban the vessel was here last month, and the above list comprised the crew at the time she left this port. A GISBORNE-OWNED VESSEL. THE 'INSURANCE. GISBORNE, This Day. The wrecked scow Surprise was owned by Robb Bros., of Gisborne, having recently been purchased by them for the Gisbonie-Whangarei coal trade. She had just completed tho first trip. The vessel was insured for £650 in tlw New Zealand office. Messrs. Robb estimate their loss at £400 above that amount.
