FARMERS' UNION.

[BT TELEr.RArH. — I'BESS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTCHURCH, 30th May. The annual conference of representatives of North Canterbury branches of the Farmers' Union was opened to-day. The president, Mr. D. Jones, addressed the delegates, reviowing tho work of the union for the past year. He adversely criticised tho Laad Bill. Referring to the taunt that had been levelled against the Farmers' Union that it was interfering in politics, ha said in sonic respects it was impossible not to 3o so; but the union had striven to avoid party politics. The union would have opposed tho Land Bill whether introduced by tho Government or by the Opposition. He advocated co-opera-tion amongst farmers in respect to the sale of wool." Mr. D. Jones was unanimously reelected president. A number of tho delegates spoke' in appreciation of the work Mr. Jones had dono for the union. Mr. M. F. Ryan ivas re-elected vicepresident, and Mr. Wilfred Hall treasurer. Mr. G. W. Leadley moved — "That this conference of farmers, representing nil parts of North Canterbury, desire to place on record their emphatic conviction that no legislation relating to the disposal of the unsold Crown lands will be satisfactory unles3 it clearly provides for tho option of securing tho freehold in all cases where the land is held under close settlement conditions, and all farmers are urged to do their utmost to secure tho legalising of this principle." — Carried.
