PRESS ASSOCIATION. GISBORNE, 22ud March. 'A four-roomed cottage at Ormond, occupied by William Morris, was destroyed hy fire while the family was absent at a sports meeting. It is understood that the Government has decided to purchase a site for a drill hall here. NAPIER, 22nd March. Tho Supreme Court to-day heard a civil action, A. L. Blylhe v. the Napier otai-r-IJowkett Building Society, a claim tor £111 Is in connection with the sale of certain shares in tho society, which had beon sold by the society's late secretary, Geo. White. The court was occuEied nearly all day, and the hearing will c resumed to-morrow. NEW PLYMOUTH, 22nd March. The Divorce Court has been occupied over two days hearing the case Burrows Burrows and Tahn (co-respondent). The jury, after two hours retirement, dismissed the petition, with costs against tho petitioner. A Maori lad, fourteen years of age, came up for sentence at the Supreme Court to-day for forgery and utterihg. He war, admitted to twelve months' piobation. PAHIATUA, 22nd March. A five-roomed house, owned by Mrs. H. Lickfold, and occupied by A. Matthews, was completely destroyed by fire early this morning. The insurance on the ouildiug was £100 in the Alliance oflice. The furniture wa3 insured for £75 in the Victoria office. The origin oi the fire is unknown. HEEFTON, 22ud March. ihe police raided a Chinese store today. They found a stock of opium and arrested several Chinamen in consequence. OAMARU, 22nd March. Donald M 'Donald, with several aliases, who has been wanted by the Invercargill police since 1905, for forgery and uttering at Nightcaps, was arrested here today. M'Doiiald had been masquerading as a sheep buyer at Palmerston, Waima,te, Timaru, and Temuka. He recently purchased a merry-go-rcund "for i>6oo, and was negotiating for a farm at Waimate at a cost of £13,000. DUNEDIN, 22nd March. lhe following sentences were passed by Mr. Justice Williams this morning :— Thomas Coughlau, for sending a false telegram twelve months' imprisonment : Thomas George William Gould, burglary and tneft, twelve months,- Jessie Elizabeth Blissard, aged nineteen, who had pleaded guilty of thaft from a dwelling, was ordered to come up for sentence wflen called upon.
