"Mr. John Gibson, of Ashley Downs, has been formally advised that the Government has decided to acquire his estate for close settlement purposes. The price, it is believed, is £4 10s per acre. The are"a comprises approximately 3500 acres, Mr. Gibson retaining the homestead block. With reference to cheap grapes, Messrs T. E. Shiel and Co., of this city, have received a postcard from Mr. A. E. Pitt, of Adelaide, who was here about a month ago. Mr. Pitt states : "Arrived homo after very pleaasnt trip through New Zealand. Glad to' get back to the land of cheap fruit. Hope you will agitate to got our luscious grapes admitted into New Zealand." The rabbit trapping season for the export trade opened yesterday.
