WANGANUI WINS THE QUICKSTEP. [BY TKX.XG&APH. — r«nE,ss ASSOCIATION, j CHRISTCHURCH, 16th February. The Exhibition band contest was resumed this morning, with a number of preliminary solo competitions, which were taken in both the concert hall and West's Castle Theatna. The contest closed with the quickstep competition. HERD INTERVIEWED. Lieut. Herd, of tho Wellington Garrison Band, interviewed this morning by a Post reporter as to the band's performance in the Exhibition Band Contest, stated that his band in both selections played splendidly — a fact which was admitted by competent musicians — and he could not understand on what grounds tho band's position had been assigned by^ tho judge. After a really good perform- "■ ance of tho test selection, the band was placed eighth on the list, and, finally, it was given fifth placo in the grand aggre-, gate. Most of our leading conductors, 1 said Mr. Herd, expressed their great aur- | prise at tho band not being placed higher aftor the good performances givon, Lieut, Herd is quite proud of his bands-men, who, ho says, worked very Iwl indeed, and did their best to uphold the honour i of the Empire City.
Mr. J. L. Kelly, formerly editor of tho New Zealand Times, intends setting out on a trip to Great Britain on tho Obwcbtry Grnngo, departing on 28th February.
