SOLO COMPETITIONS. TBT TEtBGRArn.— PRKSS ASSOCIATION.! CHRISTCHURCH, 11th February. The Exhibition band contest started to-day. Tlio proceedings opened at 9 o'clock with the B-flat bass preliminary competition, eight players taking part. The most popular pieces with the competitors were "Schnsueht" and "In Cellar Cool." The following is the order in which the soloists appeared : — T. Barton (Denniston), C. Clayton (Qisborne), E. Frascr (Dunedin Navals), C. Smith (Mornington), W. Crosby (Ist Infantry, Auckland), N. Allen (Taranaki Garrison), O. Webstev (Kaikorai), and v. G. Gallop (Woolsto'n). T. H. King (Oamaru Garrison), and L. Brown (Invereaigill) did not appear. The ' judges (Mr. . W. S. Kin") selected T. Barton (Denniston), E. jjraser (Dunodin Navals), and C. U. Gallop (Woolston) to, play off for first and second places. ' 'iheso competitoie performed most satisfactorily. The baritono competition was tlien commenced. Thero were twenty-nine entries, and di these tw"enty-ono appeared to take part. They were as follows : — B. Tierney (Ruahmc), E. May (Hastingß), •W. Yeoman (Dunedin Navals), G. Jensen (Wanganui Garrison), W. Munro (Greymouth), J. Cclquhonn j (Newcastle City), and A. Hall (Mornington). Tbi» following were selected to play in the finals:— E. Gilbert (Ist Infantry, Auckland), Highman (Derry's), J. Elder (Masterton Municipal), A. Martin (Derry's), J- S. .Barton (Woolston), and G. Barton (Donniston), 73 points, 3. Baritones— J. S. Barton (Woolston), 89 points, 1 ; A. Martin (Derry's), 88 points, 2 ; J. Elder (Alasterton Alunicipal), 86 points, 3; G. Jensen (Wangamu Garrison), 85 points, 4. K Gilbert (Auckland) and J. Highman (Derry's), 83 points each, tied for fifth and sixth places. B-flat Cornets — G. Buckley (Wa.ij.v nui), 95 points, 1 ; T. Gccdedl (Grcyraouth), 90 points, 2 ; J. R. Swindon (Wellington), 82 points, 3 ; J. Humphries (lnvercargill' Garrison), 78 points, 4 ; J. Bailey (Dunedin Citizens'), 77 points, 5 ; I?. M'Lean (Kaikorai), 76 points, 6. Twcuty-two soioists competed.
