EDUCATION CONFERENCE.
Members of boards of advice and training college principals sat in conference at Parliament Build/ings throughout yesterday, proceedings being in camera. Amongst-items on the order paper are the following proposals by fc H A E. Milnes, B.Sc. :— "(1) That the following subjects should bo compulsory for all students in training— (a) Swimming and life-saving ; (b) first aid [this is a necessary corollary to the compulsory physiology, and would be very invaluable for any teacher in a backblocks district, particularly in Auckland] ; (c) rifle shooting (men only) and \olunteer work. (2) That some clause be. added rendering a course of training compulsory for all future appointments to secondary schools. A graduate who had just finished his course should have at least six months' training in high school work before being allowed to teach in a secondary school. (3) Establishing a kindergarten school-, say, at Wellington; all intending infants' teachers should be encouraged to attend there for training. (4) As the majority of students in training are living away from homo in boardinghouses with little convenience for study and many distractions, would it, not be possible to found a hostel at each centre for their accommodation, as is done in England and America."
