AN EXTENSIVE FLOWER SHOW. THE BAND CONTEST. CHRICTCHURCH, 6th Feb. The floiver show was ojiened in the main corridor of tho Exhibition to-day. Begonias formed the chief feature, and the show is pronounced by experts to be without dottbt tho largest and finest ever held in tho colony. Ab much was said of the beautiful and extensive show helda few weeks ngo, which was adjudged to bo one of the best ever seen in Australasia; but this one, it is agreed, far excels that. The total of 265 entries for the competition constitutes a lecord for tho Canterbury United Horticultural Society, which it) controlling the show. The exhibits cover about ono thousand feet of tables, and nn additional sovon hundred feet of floor space Begonias, though not included in the list of popular flowers, were exhibited freoly by a largo number of growers, and cut flowers (especially dahlias, gladioli, and roses.) are very largely represented. There ib also a good display of fruit and vegetables. A large exhibit of Ghent nznleas in full bloom, which only left Holland at the end of November, forms a beautiful fea j ture of the show. The 1 quality in all branches of exhibits is unusually high. The society intends t6 follow up this 'success with a dahlia show on 6th nnd 7th March, wiiich will be made the climax of these horticultural exhibitions, and already extensive preparations aro being made for this event by growers. . Two hundred and fifty-four cadets o| the 3rd Wellington School Cadet Battalion, under Mfcjor.Btrrlhison, arrived at the Exhibition camp this morning. Three other battalions, comprising 290 boys, are expected to arrive- to-morrow. Arrangements are "being made for tho cadets to give a demonstration on fk6 sports ground next Thursday afternoon. ■It is anticipated by the Exhibition authorities, in view of correspondence that has been receive^ from all parts of the colony, that a very large number of people throughout New Zealand Will time their 1 Visit to the Exhibition to fit in with \the International Band Contest, which begins on Monday next, and wili last till tho following Saturday, The numerous competing bands will doubtless be accompanied in very many cases by their friends ond relatives,- and the attendance of bandsmen who h&Ve not entered for competitions will doubtless bo extremely largo. The quickstep and test selections will be rendered on" the sports ground, and solos, quartette, nnd trio selections In tho Concert Hall. The massed bands' dieplny, under Lioutenant Bentlsy, Will be given on the sports groundo on Saturday, 16th inst. Th 6 Canterbury Automobile Association's gymkhana will take placo on the sports ground on 9th March. The various centres have now chosen their representatives to compete in tho New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association's sports meeting on thb 21st and 23rd inst., and keen competition is expected in the championship events.
