LOCAL AND GENERAL. The Governor has appointed Sir James Prendergast as Deputy Governor, to act during his temporary absence from the i seat of Government. j During the past month, 96 marriages and 68 deaths were registered in Welling- 1 ton. The number of births registered in Wellington during the past month (200) is a record for this district. i The Colonial Treasurer has received, by way of "conscience money," the sum of £20, which was forwarded to the. Defence Department as " amount wrongly charged to j'ou." The following are gazetted officiating ministers under the Marriage Act : — Rev. R. B. Finsley (Methodist); Revs. R. St. Or Gray, O. P. Owen, W. L. Salter (Baptist). An Order-in-Council has been gazetted prohibiting the exportation of firearms, explosives, etc., from New Zealand to the New Hebrides. Regulations under the Opium Prohibition Act Amendment Act, passed last session, are gazetted. The Minister for Education has refused the application of the Education Board for a new school at Kaiwarra. The Government has granted sums of £248 10s for additional fittings and £100 for a library at the Teachers' Training College. A request from the men employed in the Government ballast pit at Otaki for an increase of wages from 8s to 9s a day was laid' before the Acting-Premier yesterday by Mr, A. W. Hogg. The Hon. W. Hall-Jones promised to give, early consideration to the matter. In this week's Gazette, the Minister for Lands gives notice "of his intention to acquire under the Land for Settlements Act' v thQ Te A*ai Estate, near Gisborne; containing some 10,691 acres. 'Mr. Trent, Commissioner of Crown Lands for Hawkes Bay, and Mr. T. Hyde, a member of the Hawkes Bay Land Board, arrived from Napier last night to attend a meeting of the Land Purchase Board to-day, at which tbo question of land settlement in Hawkes Bay will be discussed. The yacti Kotiri (Messrs. A. and T. Petherick) is to leave Wellington on Sunday for a foximght's cruise. Her owners anticipate, visiting Nelson, Motueka, and D'Urrille Island. Th 4 crew win consist of A. and T. Petherick, J. Smith, and A. Nixon. Alex. Grant, a single man, fifty-thfte years of age, residing at Edinburghterrace, was admitted to the hospital about 5.30 last evening suffering from a fracture of the skull. His injury was caused by a piece of timber falling on him while he was engaged removing Some scaffolding. The hospital authorities reported to-day that there was no change in his condition, which, however, is not critical. The applica-tiona for the joint position of master and matron of the Ohiro ]}ome totalled 132, including a number from clerks, accountants, clergymen, missionaries, g ao i warders, the heads of o,ther benevolent institutions, and so on, with ages ranging from twenty to fifty years. One applicant was a youth of twenty. He sta.ted that he was unmarried, but would make amends if appointed. He was engaged, and. submitted a note from his betrothed as evidence of bona-fides. Two or three other bachelors gave eimilar assurances. For the first time in the history of the coloay four Native Appellate Courts will he aitting at one time this month. Tho presiding judges will be Judges Sethtfmith qnd M'CormacJc at Russell, Judges H. F. Edger (kt& Under-Secretary for Native Affairs) and Gilfedder at Rotorua 1 ; Judges Mair and Brown, at Ngaruawahia; and Judges Jones and Sim, at Wiairoa, Hawkee Bay. Chief Judge Palmer is engaged at Wellington in directing the preparation of vaTious important rotujns required by the Native Land Commission. A sentence of three months' imprisonment with hard labour was imposed this morning by Dr. A. M'Arthur, S.M., on John M'lver, a seaman on the steamer Taieri, convicted of having used obscene language. Accused gave trouble on board tho steamer during tho night and had k> be removed by Constable Brown. He was also convicted and discharged for having resisted the constable. For insobriety Edward Donovan, George Augustus Beaton, and one first offender, were each convicted and discharged, and another was fined sa, in default twenty-four hours imprisonment. John Sheehao was remanded for a week for curative treatment. Victor Sorensen was charged, on remand, with_ hay-_ ing failed to maintain an illegitimate child. His Worship, with the consent of the defendant, made an order whereby defendant was to pay 7s 6d a weok maintenance, and £8 8s costs.
