EDUCATION BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Education Board is being held this afternoon, there being present, Messrs. R. Lee (chairman), A. H. Vile, A. W. Hogg, M.H.R., W. Allan, T. W. M'Donald, J. Kebbell, W. H. Field, M.H.E., and W. C. Buchanan. The statement of finances after providing for payments was as follows: — Building account, dr., £2556 lls lid ; general account, cr., £1511 Os 7d ; secondary account, er., £445 14a 4d ; manual and technical, cr., £546 18s 8d: teachers' salaries, cr., £251 Ob 7d ; technical account, dr., £10 14s 3d; deposit account, cr., £80 17« 6d; cr. balance, 29th January, 1907, £268 Jj; 6d ; contract liabilities, £1000 13s 6dflPtotal, £2265 8s 7d. The chairman said tho building account was less by £1000 than at this time last year, but on the other hand grants totalling £2500 were duo to the board. A deputation of Bottlers from tho Dyer Settlement, near Martinborougli, attended and presented a petition .asking that educational facilities for their children should bo granted without delay, as there arc nearly thirty of them going without education at present. Tho board promised to give full consideration to Che request- : On the motion of Mr. Buchanan it was ' decided to write to the department urging tho necessity of erecting tho school as required. Tho chairman brought up the quostion of tho decision come to by the board to erect a new school at tho west end of Petotje. The motion wag, he said, carried by four votes to three, but tho two-mem-bers who were absent had notified him that they wero not in favour of tbo proposal. Besides, the correspondence with tbo department rfiowcd that tho department was not in favour of tho proposal. Later' in the afternoon a deputation would attend and interview the board on. tho subject. Tho Works Gfommitteo recommended that a closo boarded fenco bo erected on the Mein-streot boundary of the Newtown School instead of repairing the picket, fenco, at an additional coet of £10.
