WELLINGTONS TEAM TO PLAY CANTERBURY. The selectors (Messrs. Richardson, Tucker, and Wiren) have cho&cn the following players to lepresent Wellington in the contest against Canterbury, to bo played at Christchurch on the 19lh, 21st, and 22nd inst. ; — Upham (Midland), Cobcroft, Laws (Phoenix), Muhony, Hales, S. Hickson (Wellington), * Tucker, Beechey, Collins (Old Boys), Hawthorne and M'Dermid (Gas Co.) ; emergency batsman, Barron (Midland). ' The team, which is a strong combination, differs from that which represented Wellington against the M.C.C. only by three members. M'Dermid, who is in excellent form, icplaces Williams as •« icketkeeper, and Claude Hickson aud Brice aie not in the present team. The selectors found that Williams and others could not get the necessary leave to make the trip to Christchurch.
A movement, for the formation of a Defence Cadet Corps is being taken up with enthusiasm by tho members of the Young Men's Christian Association. Fifty-five lads have enrolled themselves, and only fivo more are required to bring the corps up to the required strength. Membership is limited to lads who aro not attending secondary or public schools in the city. The overdraft of the Napier Borough Council now stands at £11,700, which is £1000 lesa than it }v&s a jc«u; »go.
