SIR EDWARD JAMES REED. [FHK3S ASSUCIATION.I LONDON, Ist December. Sir Edward Jair.cs RccJ is dead. The dececsod was at one time a great .authority on naval; mnttern.ii iJn 1C66 HcA was appointed Chief Constructor of tho Navy, und in three veers he designed ironclad ships for the British Navy" amounting to an aggregata of 35,00*0 tons, a largo ironclad frigato for the Turkish Government ; a fleet of steam transports for the Indian Government. After four years of further cervico as Chief Constructor, Mr.'l?ecd, whose objections to rigged eea-going turret ships were well-known, found these vessels no much in fnvour that ho lesigned his office in July, 1870. His resignation was made remarkable by tho capsizing of the turict ship Captain a few weeks afterv/ords. Mr. Reed afterwards entered Parliament, and wiss Lord of the Treasury at one time- during Mr. Gladstone's administration. Ho was created a K.C.B. in 1880.
