SOVEREIGNS AND POUND NOTES. TIPS FOR "PASSENGERS. The following report was made to tho City Council by tho Tramways Committee last night: — • ' 1. That accounts amounting to £1381 be passed for payment. 2. That, owing to the large number of sovereigns and one pound notes tendered to conductors for penny and twopenny farte, conductors be supplied with small receipt books in order that they may give a receipt to the passenger for tho amount of tne change, payment to bo made at the cash office, Thorndon, upon production of such receipt by the passenger. 3. That a new tower wagon be obtained at a cost of £66. 4. That Messrs. Tait and Company beinformed, in reply to their application, that no advertising will be allowed inside tram cars. 6. That notices be placed inside cars asking passengers to examine their change at the timo it is given by the conductor, alleged mistakes not to bo afterwards recognised. 6. That the tramways balance-sheet be published with the general balance-eheet of the council. 7. That the erection of a tramway shelter shed nt Island Bay be left in tho hands of the city and electrical engineers, with power to art. Tho Mayor, in answer to Councillor Godhcr, said tho land for a shelter shed at Island Bay lwd been purchaesd "months ago." Tho report was adopted.

Before Dr. A. M'Arthur, S.M., this morning a young man named Walter Durkin was charged with having stolen £160 belonging to a man named X\m. Morley. Mr. Wilford appeared for ac< cused, and obtained a remand of ihe case until next Friday, bail being al* lowed, in self, ■■£60, and two sureties of £50 each. Chief-Detective M'Grath stated that accused was arrested last eight when the offenco is alleged to have been committed, and that he had £70 in his possession.
