NEW ZEALAND BOWLERS.

MATCHES IN SYDNEY " SUBURBS. THE VISITORS DEFEATED. [PHJSS ASSOCIATION.! SYDNEY, 18th October. The New Zealand bowlera ' suffered defeat to-day in two four-rink matches against Petersham and Ashfield, suburbs of Sydney. At the former place the local team;included three inter-State players, and was a very strong combination altogether. Sneddon's rink, which performed very weakly at Maitland, was the cause of the visitors' downfall at Petersham. The other three rinks were twelve up at the finish, but Sneddon finished seventeen down. Bouskill brought his game alone; strongly, and although Wheeler's rink had the worst of it in the first couple of hours, they played so excellently uphill that they finished level. Waddell's rink .played a good, steady game. The Ashfield match was very x closely contested. For the visitors, Black and Reid played a great leading game. The local team was a good one, including two members of • the interState team. For the best part of the game the scores ran neck and neck. Then Ashfield got the lead, and maintained it to tho finish. Wher the last head started the New Zealanders were eight points down. They reduced . the deficit by a couple. It is considered here that as a 6even-rink team the visitors would be reasonably 6trong, but as an eight-rink team the combination has an element of weakness which may have its effect in the inter-State match. Following are the scores on the Petersham green: — Banting*, Court, Keast, and Sneddon, 17; Petersham, 34:. Scott, M'Gibbon, Gillies/ and Wheeler, 25 ; Petersham, 25. Akhurst, Lefevre, Doll, and Bouskill, 25; Petersham, 18. ■ Bee, Short, Hancock, and Waddell, 23 ; Petersham, 18. Totals — Petersham, 95; New Zealand, 90.
