SWIMMING.

THE WELLINGTON CENTRE. ANNUAL MEETING. The sixth annual meeting of the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association was hetd in. the New Zealan^ Hotel last evening} Mr. L. W. Ludwig occupying the chair. In presenting the report and balancesheet (a precis of which lias been published) the chairman congratulated the centre upon its ■ satisfactory position, ■which, was now better, especially financially, Jthan it had e?er been before. Despite all disadvantages which had tojbe contended with during the past two seasons, the- centre had: made very good progress. The large credit balance J£26 odd) was due to the fact that the centre had been unable to hold a carnival, and that the Government grant of £10 had come to hand after the close of the season. The chairman said he did not believe in the centre holding so much money in hand, but. he had little doubt that means could easily be found this season for disposing of the money. Special reference was made to the work' done By^the secretary of the centre (Mr. W. T. Churchward), who was about to retire. ' .Mr. T. Shields seconded the motion for adoption of the report. The motion was carried. The secretary of the Seatoun Club wroto stating that his club has disbanded. The following officers were elected for the ensuing season : — Preaident, Mr. T. Ronayne ; vice-president, Dr. (?happle ; chairman, Mr. L. W. Ludwig ; consul ', Mr. T." Shields ; hacdicapper, Mr. G. E. Sadd; representative on New Zealand Council, Mr. A. Donaldson. The elec< tion of an hon. secretary and treasurer and an auditor was held over. It was decided to open the season at the Te Aro Baths on 3rd November with a series four races. Thß events will be 50, 75, and 100 yards interclub handicaps and a 50 yards race for boys 34 years jof age and under. Officials for the opening day were elected as follows : — Eeferee, Mr. T. Shields; judges, Messrs T. Ronayne, G. Wilkes, W. T. Churchward) starter, Mr. E. J. Fleming; check starter, Mr. W. B. Smith ; timekeepers, Messrs. Ludwig and Sadd ; costume steward, Mr. D. Joslin ; result board, Mr. B. P. Guily; press steward, Mr. C. Dickenson ; handicapper, Mr. Sadd. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the retiring secretary (Mr. Churchward), and it was decided to make him a presentation as a mark of appreciation of the work he had done for the sport as secretary of the centre. Messrs. Ludwig, Shields, and Churchward were appointed a. sub-committee to go into a scheme outlined by Mr. Shields for the teaching of swimming, and to bring forward recommendations to the next meeting of the centre.
