THE FIRE POLICE.
ANNUAL MEETING. SERVICE MEDALS. COUNCIL'S APPRECIATION OF WORK DOXE. The seventh annual meeting of the Wellington Fire Police was held in tho Mayor's Room in the Town Hall last night. The Mayor presided, and Councillor Godber (Fire Brigade Committee) and Superintendent Hugo (Fire Brigade) were also present. The annual report stated that the present strength of the corps was 28. During the year the corps had lost by death an esteemed member in t"he person of Mr. T. Tolley. Mr. Neilson. had had to resign owing to ill-health, and 'Mr. A. H. ilogers owing to his leaving Wellington The membership had been increased by ( the inclusion of several members of the Kilbirnic Fire Brigade and the Thorndon district. During tho past year the corps ' had attended 105 calls to fires^ — many beipg false alarms, and on several occasions nearly the full strength had been present. Owing to the increasing number of false alarms a vigilant committee was set up to cooperate with the brigade in an endeavour to catch culprits. Thanks were given to Superintendent Hugo for valuable assistance and advice during the year. The balance-sheet showed that the receipts for the year had been £63 14s 4d, and the expenditure £30 13s 4d, leaving a balance of £33 Is. , The report and balance-sheet were adopted. ' Seven years' service medals were presented by the Mayor to Captain J. Wright, Lieut. T. BaJlinCer, Iveasurer F. Cohen, Messrs. H. T. Hildreth, and A. Asher, each having attended the inaugural meeting in October, 1899. Mr. Conen has been connected with the Fire Brigade and Fire Police movement In Wellington for 40 years and Mr. Asher for 3T years. The Mayor also announced that the following members would becomo entitled to the seven years' service medal:— .November, 1906, Secretary j. Dawson ; January, 1907, Messrs. Kirkland, Adair, and Flyger ; March, 1907, Mr. Biggs; May, 190/, Mr. Smith. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the Mayor said ho was happy to be the means of expressing the City Council's appreciation of the services rendered , during tho past year by the/Fire Police. There was no necessity at' all to exalt the Fire Police to their duty, because they were capable of doing that without exaltation, 'i'hey had a proper sense of duty and were doing it in every way conducive to the public interest. Councillor Godber, on behalf of the Fire Brigade Committee of the -Council, expressed thanks to the Fire Police for their past services, which, he said, must have been of great assistance to Superintendent Hugo. Some members of the council were also members of the Fire Police, and their practical knowledge was much appreciated by other councillors. Tho members of the corps wore sworn in again for another year. Befpre the Mayor and Councillor Godber retired, Captain Wright thanked his Worship for attending, and assured him that the Fire Police would faithfully do their duty during the coming year. His Worship, in acknowledging the compliment, said he was sure that the relations between the council and the Firo Brigade and Fire Police would continue to be df a pleasant character. Mr. Bedford, on behalf of the corps, thanked Councillor Godber for being present, and expressed the hope that he would take as keen an interest in the affairs of the Fire Police as he had done in tho pa6t. The monthly meeting of the corps was then held, Captain Wright being m the chair. Officers for the year were elected as follows: — Captain Wright, Lieutenants. Doyle, Ballinger, Bernewitz, and Biggs (pro. tern.) ; secretary, Mr. J. Dawson ; treasurer, Mr. F. Cohen.
