Mr. B. C Aston, Chief Chemist to the Agricultural Department, states that he has receivpd no details in reference to the reported discovery of extensive deposits of mineral phosphates near Hukeronui, Uhangsrei. Ifc was mentioned in the ircss Association message that "analysis B« es good indications that the phosphate will bo up to tho standard of pcrcentaga required by the Government." Mr Aston says that the analysis must hnve been got in Auckland. He intends seekine further particulars. The West Coast Times^of Wednesday last says: — "One hundred men who have been employed on the Hokitikaitoss railway have been paid off, and yesterday any of them who accepted the option of being transferred to Otira or Taihape (North Island Main Trunk line) had the option of being deported. As the men have to pay their own passages to thc-ir new location many of them do nob consider the change offered them much of a sinecure. The main body of the men are to be sent to the North Island, only about half a dozen being intended for Otira." Mr. J.
