A* MONTH'S FIGURES. A return issued to-day gives statistics of Wellington's tramway traffic for tho four weeks ended 4th September. The figures for the corresponding period last year are shown in parentheses : — Island Bay route, 223,626 (175,335); Newtown, 409,127 (358,852) ; Constablestreet, 143,696 (122,69?) ; , Oriental Bay, 139,256 (114,131) ; Wallace-street; 89,002 (98,921); Aro-street, 81,525 (77,929); Brooklyn, 92,967. Total, 1,179,199. With 150 school tickets and 11,665 return tickets the grand total is swelled to 1,200,577, producing a revenue • of £6673 19s 2£d. After making an allowance of £12 15s 8d for employees' passes (4602 fares), there is an increase of £1368 16s B^d on the revenue for the four weeks ended 29th August, 1905. The increase of passengers amounted to 848,110, distributed as f ollows : —Island Bay, 49,291 (£495 12s 10id) ; Newtown, 50,275 (£2Ol Is 7^d) ; • Constable-street, 20,999 (£47 7s 8d) , Oriental Bay, 25,125 (£134 9s sid); Aro-street, 3596 (£29 9s 4id). Wallace-street suffered a decrease of 9919 (£a3 2s Sjd). Saturdays furnished the heaviest traffic — 58,329 on Ist September, 58,094 on 18th August, arid 58,024 on 25th August. The penny sections totalled 836,060, lid 17,139, 2d 276,223, 3d 32,023, 4d 2177. The car miles run aggregated 134,391. The excess of revenue over expenditure was £1505 15s 2d. The passengers per car mile averaged' '8.83 (compared with 8.82), and the revenue was 12.15 d (11.85 d), total operating costs 9.46 d (8.09 d). x

A meeting of the council of the. New Zealand Institute of Journalists, .preliminary to the holding of fche annual meeting, was held in the Press Association's rooms yesterday afternoon. Mr. J. L. Kolly (president) occupied the chair. It was decided to nominate Mr. Chas. Earle (Evening Post) for the presidency for' the' ensuing year, the threo branch 'chairmen (Messrs. W. D. Lusty, Auckland, W. H. Atack, Wellington, and W. Qrahamj Christchurch) for the vice-presidency, and Mr. T. L. Mills (Evening Post) for tho general secretaryship. "Butter, mutton, potatoes, and flour are dearer in New Zealand, where we produce them, than in the English or Scottish markets," remarked Mr. Hogg at the meeting of the Benevolent Institution trustees this afternoon. Lieut.-Col. Robii, who is in command of the Otago volunteer district, arrived in Wellington this morning. Lieut.-Col. Davies, commanding the Auckland volunteer district, will arrive from the North to-night. A correspondent who signs himself "A.0." takes exception to "Maxim's" reference to the present Minioter of Defenco as "one who has had some slight experience as q volunteer." Our correspondent says that' as a matttr of fact Colonel Pitt bos been connected with the volunteering moverient for forty-five years and held comm^ncl' of a district for twen-ty-two years. Evans urged that the whole board should' constitute the Finance Committee, to meet once a month, and he gavo notice of motion to that effect. , Mr. Hogg naked if the oldago pensioners in tho Home liad any of the pension money for their own use. The secrotary said tho whole amount was retained by tho trustees. Mr. Hogg said ho would like to find out what the other institutions were doing, because he .heard that .Wellington was tho only place in which that; practice was carried out.
