The Arbitration Court sat this morning and heard the evidence of Dr. Ewart, Medical Superintendent of tha Wellington Hospital in tho case of Sarah Robinson v. the Union Steam Ship Company, a claim of £300 as compensation on account of the death of her husband, who, while a fireman on board the Rotoiti in August last was injured by on explosion of gas in the vessel's combustion chamber. Dr. Ewart's evidence was to the effect that death, ovhich occurred in the Hospital in January, was due to heart disease and not to burns. The remainder of the evidence will be taken at the next sitting of the court in Wellington. Mr. Hindmarsh appeared for the claimant atfd Mr. Levi for the Union Company. The Secretary of the Wellington Benevolent Institution acknowledges with thanks the receipt of £1 Is from Mr. Win. Evans, of Petone, towards the funds of the institution. The United Irish Loague held a very successful and enjoyable social gathering last evening at St. Patrick's Hall. Tha proceedings were. opened by Mr. P. J. O'Regan, who extended a weloome on behalf of the league to- the visitors present. He briefly dwelt on the objects of tlhe organisation, explaining that it was now an opportune time to press the cause of Home Rule, a measure which would provide for the homeland a government which knew the needs of its people.-., He also emphasised the need for inculcating ia tilie young a love of country and of •instilling a healthy patriotism. Mr. O'Regan then declared the proceedings open, wishing all an enjoyable time and thanking them for their enthusiastic support of the cause. During the evening items were rendered by Misses Jones and Gamble, and Messrs. Holman, O'Regan, Moriarty, and 1 Healy. Many new members were enrolled foT the league. Supper was supplied in capable style by Messrs. Towersey. In concluding it was announced that Mr. Healy would enrol any persons so desiring A. writer in the Timaru Herald makes the following political forecast : — "A new Government composed of men like J. A. Millar, Fowlds, M'Nab, Piranl with the addition of the Hon. Hali-Jo-nes, Sir Joseph Ward, and' probably Carroll, will control the destinies of the colony to the exclusion of Mills, M'Gowan, and Duncan. One whom I looked forward to as taking a prominent part in the next Parliament elected, and to take Cabinet rank, is the Hon. J. Rigg, of the Legislative Council, and the member I rely upon to tako up the threads of the policy and lead the party, so ruthlessly bereft) of their loader, is Mr. J. A. Mdllar, of Dunedin. In Sir Joseph Ward, whom all things point to becoming the new Premier, it is an open secret that now, after being knighted and having again succeeded in establishing a very successful business, he is in a sense dog-tared of public life, and anxious to make a graceful exit from the political stage ere the brilliancy of the footlights of popular and public opinion is dimmed. It is Well known that he has expressed his personal opinions upon the profession of politics as compared with a life of ease, and the comfort that social and home life presents. The strenuousness of the latta leader, Mr. Seddon, will now be an unknown quantity; it now resolves itself into a scramble and question of 'everybody for themselves,' and in the melee indications point to J. A. MillaT, or else a coalition with Messrs. Massey and Herries included in. the Ministty, that is going to prevail."
