HELLIWELL, Secretary. mARANAKI PETROLEUM COMA -PANY (LIMITED). ANALYSIS OF THE ODL, BY PRO- . FESSOR EASTERFIELD. Wellington, 15th June, 1906. Messrs. Barr, Lt>ary and Company, Wellington. Gentlemen — I have oxamined the crude potroleum sent by you on the 6th_ inst., and certified as having been drawn in Mr. Leary's presence. THE CRUDE ODL. The Bampio vrvi of a greenish colour, red by transmitted light, and without offensive &mell. It was semis-olid at the ordinary temperature but completely liquid at SOdeg. Fahr. It contained sufiicient volatile matter to flash at the ordinary temperature 'Ihe specific gravity was 84 at 65deg Fahr. Tho sampio . was free from water and grit. * DISTILLATION TEST. When distilled, tho oil gave the following products : — Benzine, ' distilling between 55deg. and 150deg. C ... 20 per cent. Burning oil, distilling between lSOdeg. and 3(Jodeg. C ... 40 per cent. Heavy oil, for lubricating, 300deg— 4*0deg C' 37 per cent. Fitch 2 per cent. Loss 1 per cent. 100 . BENZINE. Tho crude benzine had a specific gravity of .761-, was colourtecs, and had a pleasant odour. When redistilled it yielded 66 per cent, of naphtha boiling (between bßdeg and 120deg 0. BURNING OIL. Tho crude burning oil had a slightly | yellow colour. When redistilled it yielded water-whi -o keroseno with only a faint bloom. Tho oil distilling between 150 and 270 had a specific gravity of .82. Treatment of this fraction with sulphuric acid and alkali scarcely affected the density of the oil, but removed practically the whole of tho bloom. The lead oxide teat indicated absence of sulphur compounds. The kerosene is of greater density than "White Rose" oil, and shows a greater tendency to smoke when burnt in American lampe. This defect is also shown by Russian kerosenes, but is largely overcome by the practical manufacturer. HEAVY ODL AND PARAFFIN. The heavy oil setft at the ordinary temperature owing to the deposition of solid paraffin. The maximum amount of paraffin scale which I obtained was equal to 16 per cent, of the crude petroleum. After pressing and remelting, the scale showed a melting point of 13Udeg. F. The yield of paraffin wax in a properlyarranged distillery fitted for cold filtration would bo greater than in a laboratory experiment. Tho melting "point of the wax would also be raised by systematic sweating as carried out by tho modern manufacturer. LUBRICATING ODL. The heavy oil filtered from tho wax yielded by the usual acid and alkali treatment a reddish brown oil of good appearance, lho oil it> a gooa lubricant it was tested upon the crank-shaft bearings and in tho high-pre&6ure cylinder of a stationary engine, and gave complete satisfaction. Tho petroleum is from many points of view unusual. There is no doubt that i£ tho flow can bo kept up. tho oil will provr a valuable asset to the colony. I have tho honour to remain, Yours faithfully, (Signed) THOMAS H. EASTERFIELD. The Prospectus will be issued on FRIDDAY, 22nd JUNE, 1906. BARR, LEARY AND CO. EAST AND EAST. / J. MARTYN HUME.
