-A NATIONAL MEMORIAL. -Mr. Cljas. Hioms, of Ohingaiii, writes as follows to the editor : — "Sir, as a fitting tribute to the msmory of the late Right Hon. R. J. Seddon, a New Zealand memoiial should be erected in. his honour in Wellington, and as a small contribution thereto 1 encolse my cheque for. £2 2s. If your paper announces that it ■will receive subscriptions 1 am assured that a hearty and ready response will ba forthcoming from one end of New Zealand to the other." As we believe there is a general -desire as mentioned by Mr. Hioms, we shall be pleased to receive subscriptions for the above object. " In' "view of the great public interest evinced in the time and place of the late, Premier's funeral,, this information, if available, will be posted on our public office window to-morrow. Until Mrs. Seddon's arrival. late to-night nothing definite will be known on the subject. In preparation for the obsequies of the late Premier, Wellington florists have been working night and day to fulfil orders for wreaths. Mpny Maoris — men, women and childrep — have assembled in Wellington for the .obsequies. These emotional people make no pretence- at concealing their grief. On Lambton-quay, at mid-d;iy, some of them openly lamented their "father," as they have termed the late Premier. The Mayor and the Town Cleik of Dunedin will represent that city at the Premier's funeral. The Encounter returned to port this afternoon. This warship will probably >pttt to sea again this evening to meet the Oswestry Grange. "A Lancashire Lad" writes suggesting that as the late Premier was a Lancashire lad, all who hail from that country should join in subscribing towards the cost of a wreath. He forwards 4s for 1 this purpose. Probably; our correspondent would serve his purpose by attending the meeting of Lancashire men to be held on ilondaf at Godber's rooms. 1 DUNEDIN, This Day. The Westland Teachers' Institute passed a motion of condolence with Mrs. Seddon and family this morning. The institute will be represented at the obsequies by Mr. T. .H. Gill, of Wellington. The Mayor of Kumara has 6trongly endorsed the request by the coonty chairmen that the remains of the late Premier be interred in Westland. GORE. This Day. The Committee of the Ge*e Hospital scheme, the success of which is assuied, has decided to constitute the institute a Seddon memorial. ' CHEAP STEAM PARES. DUNEDIN, This Day. The Union Company has decided to issue- return tickets at single fares for Mr. Seddon's faneral, available for a week. This only applies to members of Trades and Labour Councils and labour organisations.
