LOCAL AND GENERAL. » With 'Monday's issue of the Evening Post will be circulated a reproduction of what is probably the. last photpgraph for which Mr. Seddon gavo a sitting. It depicts our late Premier at work with his two secretaries in the- Grand Hotel, ■Melbourne. Th© likeness is a striking one,' and tho portrait is full of pathos — • the wan expression on Mr. Seddon's features telling of the great strain undergone by him during his triumphal tour of the Commonwealth, which ended in so tragic a manner on »Sunday last. The picture, which is reproduced from a copy of a photograph published in the Australasian, will be* printed on good illustration paper suitable for framing, and will be distributed free with copies of tho Evening Post on Monday. The postal authorities have been advised of the departure of the Victoria from Sydney for Auckland on Thursday last with 108 bags of mails. No mails for Wellington were sent by this despatch. The Promier has promised to send a Government engineer to Shannon in A few days to make a survey of the local creeks for the purposes of electrical energy. The steamer Warrimoo, which is sailing for Sydney to-night, is taking a shipment of 513 sheep for the Sydney sales. Tho shipment comprises 20 Shropshire ewes and 7 rams from the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Co., Bluff, 243 rams and 187 ewes from the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company, Lyttelton, 20 Turns from Pine and Co., of Christchurch, and 36 Shropshire rams from Mr. Tuplin, of Canterbury. . It will be remembered tha^ consider able debate took place at tthe recent Conference of Friendly Societies, held in Wellington, concerning the disagreement between the Nelson branch of the Medical Association and the Motueka Friendly Societies regarding an alleged boycott of a lodge doctor by other medical men. The Nelson Colonist, in a recent issue, states that a mutually satisfactory agreement between tho parties has been arrived at. A large number of Sunday School teachers gathered in Wesley Institute lost night to listen to a lecture by MrGill on "The Art of Teaching." Professor Adams's primer on teaching was taken as the test-book, and much help* ful information was given in a most interesting manner by the lecturer. The lectures are to be continued every -week, and any one interested in Sunday School work may join the class. A bottle containing a note, written in pencil, has been picked up by a fisherman named Montaguo Garnaut, off Whangaroa. Tho bottle was halffull of water/ and consequently part of the writing is unreadable. The note reads as follows "I am stranded on a small island in the gulf. For God's sake sond somo help. I havo not eaten food for days. . . few oysters and come water. Oh! God, I feel (?) • horrible . . . sensation (!) I've . . ." Most of tho gulf islands are frequently' visited by fisherman. The note has been handed to the Customs Department. Poa rifle 3 in the hands of youthful "Buffalo Bills," are said to be causing great stock mortality at Wnikouaiti, South Island. At a meeting of tho Otago Farmers' Union, a Mr. Buckland stated that on Silver Peaks he had lost 35 head of cattle, seven of which he found to have been killed by pea riflo bullets. The remaining 28 head had completely disappeared, and no trace had since been found of them. The old-fashioned idea, that heavy bed-clothes are necessary for warmth, no longer holds good.
