DEBATE IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS.
VOLUNTARY SCHOOLS. LONDON, 13th June. Mr. Augustine Birrell, President of the Board of Education, has offered to introduce an amendment to the Education Bill to enable voluntary schools to appeal to tho Board of Education against tho refusal of a local authority to tako over a school. Mr. Redmond hailed the concession with gratitude. He trusted that it would be the forerunner of other modifications enabling tho Nationalists to do what they were most anxious for — namely, to join the Nonconformists in passing 'a measure which, while safeguarding tho Catholic schools, would remove Injustices inflicted upon Nonconformists. The debate was suspended until Monday, when a guillotine resolution will bo introducea to enable the remaining clauses and stages to be finished. . The House adjourns on the 10th August. It will reassemble for an autumn session in October and prorogue in December. The Times says that Mr. Redmond's attitude is useful as showing the Unionists bow doubtful and precarious is tiny support they may reckon on from that quarter.
