GUILTY OF MANSLAUGHTER.
A WOMAN SENTENCED. [BT TELEOBAPB. — PBEBO ASSOCIATION. \ PALMERSTON, Bth June. Maria Harris was found guilty to-day of the manslaughter of Murfitt, a horse trainer, and sentenced to five years' imprisonment. Sir Robert Stout, addressing the prisoner, said she was liable to imprisonment for life, and he did not know that for a person who took another's life that was too severe punishment. Tho Probation Officer showed that prisoner had been subjected to brutality by the deceased, and that her mind may have been affected, though she was not mad at the time she committed tbe offence. She had received provocation, and the deed was done suddenly. The sentence would not bo an encouragement to make human life less sacred than it should be in every community. Prisoner collapsed absolutely on hearing the sentence, falling n gainst tho back of the dock, from which sho wa< removed in an inert state by the warders. The Eentence appeared quite unexpected by the prisoner, and her lamentations could be heard till she was removed from tbe precincts of the court.
