In chambers in the 'Bankruptcy Court yesterday, Mr. Henry, Lower Hutt, and the Taupo Totara Timber Company, petitioned on a debt of £200, for which they recovered judgment, to have C. J. Murdoch has given notice to move at the meeting of the Karori Borough Council o-n Tuesday next : — "That the resolution passed on Tuesday, the sth inst., agreeing to pay Messrs. Hill and Lloyd a sum of £400 to cancel their road-widen-ing contract, be rescinded, and that Messrs. Hill and Lloyd be informed that the council is willing to terminate their contract and pay the actual cost to them of the wiork already done, plus 10 per cent, for supervision and use of plant, on condition that Messrs. Hill and Lloyd produce satisfactory documents to show the amount expended by them on the said contract." The secretary of the Wellington Musical Union announces that the usual practice for tho chorus will be held on Monday next, at 8 o'clock. It is the intention of the society to give its second concert, vi — „ "King Olaf," about the end of August, and it is hoped that every member will attend. The orchestra will not meet for rehearsal until the Tuesday of the following week, viz., the 19th. An uncommon case came under the notice of the Magistrate to-day when a man with one leg was charged with helple'ps drunkenness. Hi 3 name is Alexander Eadie, and according to SubIn&pector O'Donovan, he was just a week ago sentenced on a charge- of' insobriety to seven days' imprisonment. He was to have been discharged from the gaol to-day, but the prison authorities this morning advised the police that' he was unfit to be discharged as -he had developed delirium tremens, and asked them to take him over. The police, in order to overcome a technical difficulty, took the man from the prison, and- as soon as he set foot on Wool-combe-street, charged him with helpless drunkenness and brought him before his Worship. ' The defendant, weak and trembling, asked his Worship to send him to the Hospital. Sub-Inspector O'Donovan said these cases would not be received there and submitted that the defendant, in his own interests, should be remanded to gaol for another seven days. His Worship adopted thie course, saying that the defendant, in his present condition, would be just as well off there as anywhere. Sub-Inspector O'Donovan asked that if hospital treatment wes found to be necessary at the gaol, accused should be sent to* the hospital. The judgment of the Chief Justice in the case of George Morris Mason v. Frederick Tearce, a claim of £150, amount of a> deposit on a contract for a lease witlli a purchasing clause, was announced to-day by the Registrar of the Supreme Court. There was a counterclaim for specific performance of the agreement, and iti was heaTd in conjunction with the claim. Plaintiff had agreed to purchase 300 acres of defendant's land at Kawhautara, near Featherston, and he paid a deposit! of £150, • but he declined to complete the transaction, alleging that ! the property was liable to floods, alI tttiough defendant had represented that it was free from water. His Honour entered up judgment for plaintiff for the £150 claimed, and also judgment in his favour on the counter claim, with the usual costls. Messrs. Campbell and Herdman were for plaintiff and Mr. Hislop for defendant. In the M'Gregor Wright Art Gallery on Lambton-quay some very attractive and clever paintings are now on exhibition. These include a portrait of a fisherman well known in the Worser Bay district, painted by Mr. Van der Velden, a group of landscapes, seascapes, and studies from the brush of an ex- Wellington artist, Mr.. George Butler, who is now in London; and a number of bright studies of scenes and characters painted by the English artist, Mr. Hounsoni Byles*, R.8.A., during a tour of Spain. The gallery, which is at the rear of M'Gregor Wright's shop, is. open to the public. In another column appears a notice regarding the closing of entries for the annual show of the Wellington Poultry, Pigeon, and' Canary Society, which is to be held at) His Majesty's Theatre, Courtenay-place, on 28th, 29th, and 30th June. The show promises to be the largest yet held in the Empire City. The list of trophies, special prizes, etc., allotted in addition to prize money is an extremely liberal one, and all sections of the show are said to have been well catered for. A list of gentlemen from whom schedules and entry forms can be obtained also appears, and the secretary will, on application, supply intending exhibitors with all particulars. There was a large attendance of members and visitors at hist night's session of the King's Coronation Lodge of Good Templars. Bro. H. G. Vine, G.E.S., Wanganui, was officially received. The Star of Newtown Lodge attended officially and officered the lodge, Bro. Vine, and later Bro. Price, presiding. Two candidates wero proposed for membership. The secretary was, instructed to forward a letter of congratulation to Sis. Richards, on the occasion of her silver anniversary. Tho following contributed to the evening's programme : — Siss. M'Donald, Mills, Graham, Morris, Bros Pearce, Sorenson,' Vine, and Riddle. The matron reported ttoat thirteen patients had been admitted during the month and twelve discharged.
