PERSONAL MATTERS.
Mr. Geo. Barnes leaves for Christchurch by the Rotomahana to-night to arrange for the season of "The J.P." in that city. Tho Premier, Sir Joseph Ward, and the Hon. C. H. Mills will spend the Christmas holidays in Wellington. 'There will be no appointment of an Acting-Judge of the Supreme Court during the absence on twelve months' furlough of Mr. Justice Williams. . - llr. W. Dinnie, Commissioner of PoKce in New Zealand, who has been to Tasmania on business, will leave Syd(ley for Wellington next Saturday. Mr. G. Fowlds-, M.H.R. for Grey Lynn, will leave the colony at the end «f the" year for a trip to the Old Country, chiefly for the purpose of attending the •ono hundredth birthday of his father. The Premier, and the Minister for Lands' (Hon. T. Duncan), Native Affairs (Hon J. Carroll), and Customs (Hon. C. H. Mills) returned from Christchurch today. The Pjstmaster-General (Sir Joseph Ward) will be back to-morrow Staff-Captain and Mrs. Ward, of the Salvation Army, who have been stationed in Auckland for some time, left One-, hunga for Wellington to-day to assist in the administration of the children's rescue work in .this city. Mr. Sydney Hoben, formerly of Najpier, is resigning the positions of mu»ical critic of the Sydney Mail and organist of S^t. Patrick's Cathedral,' Sydney, in order that he may return to New Zealand for the benefit of his health. - Mr. Frank Meadowcroft, general manager for Cadbury Brothers in New Zealand, and Mrs. Meadowcroft, who are about to pay a visit to Great Britain, received ■presentations last night from "The Monday Nighters," a club composed of young jnen belonging to the Terrace Congregational Church. • Mr. Gover,- who has been in ohargo *f the Upper Plain School, Wairarapa, for the past twenty-nine years, is retiring from the service of the Board of Education, and intends- to settle down in Wanganui. On Thursday last, ho and Mrs. Gover and family were entertained by the settlers on the Upper Plain, and ireceived several tokens of goodwill. .- Mr. Justice Cooper (accompanied by Mia Ella Cooper) has gone to the Auckland district for the Christmas vacation. His Honour will spend the holiday at WaiTrera. He will return to Wellington on S&fch January, when he will hear an application in re the recent (litigation concerning the burning of Nelson College. Afterwards his Honour goes on to Dunedin, where he will take up for twelve months the duties of Mr. Justice Williams, who has been granted leave of absence for that period. Mr. Philip Armstrong, brother of Messrs. Ralph and Walter Armstrong, well-known in New Zealand racing circles, died this morning after a painful illness (telegraphs our Carterton correspondent). Mr. Armstrong, who had reached the age of 62 years, was born in j Wellington^ and had resided in the Waixarapa- sinco 1875. Amongst a family of nine children are Mr. Geo-rge Armstrong (proprietor of the Opunake Times), and Mrs. Rupert Fairbrother (wife of tho Vicar of Inverell, New South Wales). The interment takes place on Thursday afternoon. Amongst recent honours conferred by ■ the King, two have gone to members of Ihe veterinary profession. One is a baronetcy conferred on Mr. L. P. Cooper, of Bii&namstead, Shenstone-, who, before taking over the direction of the sheep dip manufacture established by his uncle (the late Mr. William Cooper, also a vetesinay surgeon), -was for many years a private practitioner in Lichfield. The other , ris a -knighthood conferred on Professor ' ",J. F. M'Fadgeon, Principal and Dean of the Royal "Veterinary College, London. Only a year or two ago another distinguished veterinarian, Professor G. T. Brown, received the .honour of a knighthood onjbis retirement from the administration of the Veterinary Department of Great Britain.
