tOCAL AND GENERAL -♦ The- election of four Maori members of the House of Representatives will be held to-morrow. There are 24 candidates for the four seats, including tho retiring members, Mr. Hone Heke (Northern), Mr. Wi Pere (Eastern), Mr. Henare Kaihau (Western), and Mr. Tamo Parata (Southern). \ The decision of the Petone Borough Council to increase the dog tax from 6s to 10s has met with strong disapproval, as an outcome of which a petition bearing abont 425 signatures was presented to the Council last night by a deputation headed by Mr. Gough. After hearing the representations, tho Mayor promised the matter would be given reconsideration, "i- Later Councillor Kidd gave no- 1 tico to rescind tho resolution increasing the tax. There are to be no special volunteer trains from Wellington to Trentham on Saturdays until 20th January, but arrangements have been nitide whereby marksmen who desire to go out to the range may proceed on oidinary trains. On Boxing Day tho Wellington District Defence Rifle Clubs' Association will hold .its annual meeting at Trentham, and on New Year Day the Wellington Volunteer Rifle Association will hold its annual meeting at tho samo ,range.
