ARBITRATION COURT APPOINTMENTS. TO THE EDITOR.
Sir,— l crave space in your columns to reply to the would-be funny critic of the Bricklayers' Uniun and "its resolution anont the Arbitration Court. And, first, I would remind him that not even to point a moral, much less to adorn a tale, may a man misrepresent others. The bricklayers' resolution " requests the Government in its future appointments to the Presidency of the Arbitration Court or Courts to be assured that the Judge or Judges appointed shall bo not only of impartial mind,, but also in thorough sympathy with the objects of tho Arbitration Act." I need hardly state that the objects of the Arbitration Act are to secure just and equitable terms and conditions between employers and employed. Where, may I ask our would-be funny critic, does the bricklayers' resolution suggest a leaning to one sido or the other? The resolution was passed because, owing to pressure of business and consequent delays, a second Couit, as .sug- j gested by {he Prime Minister, may shorlly'bc constituted. So much depends i upon tho presiding Judge, his discretion;! ry powers nro so great, that ouc unwise tippointnicnt m.iy render the Act a nullity. Sir Frederick Darley, Chief Justice of New youth Wales, *is considered an upright Judge. Yet he is avowedly hostile to the New South Wales Arbitration Act. Would not the appointment of such as he to the Presidency of an Arbitration Court be a grave mistake 1 Organised labour is surely justified in seeking that the Judge to be appointed shall be not only impartial, but also in thorough sympathy with the great work entrusted to him — the securing of industrial peace. — I am, etc., CHAS.
