The Chief Electoral Officer received word this afternoon that Mr. Stallworthy had after all beaten Mr. Harding for the Katpara seat, the votes being -. Stallworthy 2165 Harding 2159 Permits issued will not affect the above result. This increases tho Government majority and reduces the Opposition's strength by one vote, making the total strength of the Government 56. „ Mr. Sfallworthy's name should be included in the list of new members published on page s,'while, 'while Mr. Harding's name should be deleted from the list of members of the new Parliament appearing en the same page. Mr. John Stallworthy was born at Milua, Samoa, on 10th December, 1854. Hia father was the Rev. George Stallworthy, one of the early missionaries to the South Sea Islands, and his grandfather on the mother's side was also a missionary. On leaving school he entered commercial life in the City of London, and, after a year or more spent on the east coast' of EnglMid, he joined the ship City of Auckland, Captain Ashby, in 1872, and came to Auckland. He was married in January, 18>73, at.Whangaroa~.- He became a school teacher, Avas in charge of Aratapu School, and in 1890 started the Wairoa Bell newspaper, which he still owns and runs. He has always taken a leading part in local matters.
