REPRESENTATIONS FROM JAPAN. [press association.! MELBOURNE, 20th October. Replying to a question in the House of Representatives this e'.ening, Mr. Deakin, the Federal Prime Minister, stated that negotiations were proceeding with the Japanese Consul-General in reference to the Immigration Restriction Act. It was untrue, said Mr. Deakin, that the object of the negotiations was to restrict the number of immigrants from Japan. The Government was considering if it was possible to restate the general principles of Australia's restriction policy — without altering its substance—so as to meet the susceptibilities of the Japanese.
