RIFLE SHOOTING. SATURDAY'S CONTESTS.
That something more than desire Jor amusement actuates volunteers in seeking marksmanship practice was shown on Saturday, when 178 volunteers braved {lie inclement weather conditions and journeyed to Trentham rifle range. The variable wind that prevailed made accurate shooting difficult, but some fair scores woro made. The ground was wet from the recent rains, and th© want of proper drainage on the range made the trouble greater. The range officer for the day was Lieutenant Esson, Colour-Sergeant Hoache and Sergeant Gamble being in the target trench. The parade state was as follows: —City Rifles 26, Highland Rifles 23, Post and Telegraph Rifles 20, Zealondia Rifles 20, Guards 18, Hutt "Valley Rifles 18, D Battery IS, College Rifles 6, Kelburne Rifles 29. Company competitions resulted as follows :: —■ D BATTERY. The D Battery held a. competition for trophies. Driver Butler won' Mr. Cathie's trophy, and trophies presented by Messrs. Rowe and Sons and Janson and Sons were won by Gunners Plimmer and Johnson respectively. The committee's two trophies were won by Sergt. Skelley and Bomb. Wickens (ten shots). 500 600 Hep. Tl. Dvr.
