MIRAMAR BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FINANCIAL STATEMENT. LATE FERRY STEAMERS. The meeting of the Miramar Borough Council last evening was presided over by tho Mayor (Mr. F. i'ownsend) and was attended by Councillors Witt, Richards, Wardell, Brodic, and M/Grath. A communication was received from Messrs Seaton and Sladden with reference to the requirements oil the Council on certain proposed road works through Messrs A. and C. Crawford's property at Miramar. It was stated that this work when completed would form a main to Seatoun. The Mayor said that the subject would require serious consideration inasmuch as the proposed road would bo part of the tramway route. On the motion of Councillor M'Grath, it was decided to" reply stilting that the road &huuld be 66ft wide witli footpaths 10ft wide on each side, properly kerbed, the roadway to be metalled to a width of 30ft. Messrs Bunny 1 , Rawson, and Petherick wrote stating that the by-laws of the Mirimar Borough Council stipulated that a dwelling could not be erected on on area le»3 tjion 40 perches. They had a client who cut up his land into sections of various sizes less than 40 perches, and they submitted that the by-laws should br altered in order to permit of bis building on the sections «, question. They advised that the present by-law was bad and ; that it had been altered by several other local bodies. On the motion of Councillor Wardell the letter was referred to the Borough Solicitor for an opinion as to the by-law. A statement submitted by the clerk showed that the cash at the bank amounted to £142 8s Od During the last six months tho receipts were .-61130 3s 2d, including a balance carried fbrwnrd of £170 17? lOd, and rates amounting to £737 10s sd. The expenditure was £987 14s 6d, the principal items being £344 0s 2o" for maintenance of roods, new works, and cxpendituie on roads, £149 Us 7d for interest nml £129 for charitable nirl. Attention was drawn by a document signed by sixty piyisons to the inconvenienci enured by the absence of any communication between the city und the distnot after 6 o'clock in the evening. They asked the Council to make, provision for at lenst a bi-weokly service by steamers leaving the city al 10.30 or 10.4,5 p.m., urn* said they understood that the Minvmur Company wns prepnred to take half the risk if the Council would contribute the other half an •! subsidy. Tho cost of the bi-wce'tly late, service was stated as £450 and the Company was understood to be willing to undertake it for a subsidy ot £225, relying on a one shilling fare to produce the rest. The Mayor undertook to bring down a- report on the subject at the next meeting
