PERSONAL MATTERS.
Mr. Justice Cooper arrived from the South this morning by the Rotomahana. Constable D. Wilson, of the Lambtonquay Police Station, has been transferred to Palmerston North. Last evening his comrades in Wellington presented him with a souvenir of esteem, Mr. James Reid has been appointed Deputy Registrar of Marriages, Births, and Deaths for the Mount Cook district. Deputy Registrars of Births and Deaths havo been appointed as follows : Mr. Jas. Krrk, Hutt ; Mr. Wm. Thgs. Tiegurtha, Upper Hutt. The Very Rev. Father Hays Jias returned to Wellington, where he is the guest of Dr. and Mrs. Mackin. He has concluded his four months' temperance crusade in this colony, and his present visit is a private one. His health at present is not good. Mr. J. S. Kelly, who is leaving the Christchurch Press to assume the editorship of the Grey River Argus, Greymouth, has been presented with souvenirs of esteem by the staff of the Press, and by the members of the Christchurch Journalists' Union. Mr. F. C. Turnbull, A.A.1..E.K, for some time assistant electrical inspector to the Wellington Fire Underwriters' Association, leaves for California by next mail steamer. He intends studying the high tension system of distribution of electric currents and electric railway traction. News has been received by cablegram ■that Mr. S. P. Waddington, esaminer to the Associated Board of the Royal Academy and Royal Cqllego of (Music, will not bo able to visit New Zealand, as previously announced. The examina-tionu will therefore be conducted by Mr. Graham P. Moore, who is well known throughout the colony, having acted as examiner on two previous occasions'— in 1899 and in 1904. Tho New Zealand Employers' Federation yesterday appointed the following officers for tho ensuing year :— President, Mr. J, C. Thomson, Dunedin; Vice-Pre-sident; Mr. D. Goldio, Auckland ;" Treasurer, Mr. E^jF. Duthie, Dunedin; Secretary, Mr. W. Scott, Dunedin; Trustee, Mr. W. L. Simpson, Dunedin; Auditor, Mr. Peter Barr, Dunedin; Federation Parliamentary Committee, Messrs. R. Hannah, W. H. Bennett, J. Allen, M.H.R., T. Ballinger, C. Cathie,' F. C, Crease, J. P. Luke, A. Veitch, and W. Cable, Wellington. It was remitted to the Executive to consider the question of taking steps to havo all "odd" public holidays on Mondays. Votes of thanks were passed to the Executive, tho Chairman of the" Conference (Mr. Wm. Cable), and the Secretary (Mr. Hy. Field), regret being espresseel at Mr. Field's illness. The late- Dean Hovell having been for many years chaplain of the Napier Garrison, and later of the East Coast Battalion, iand also of tie Scinde Lodge of Masons, the funeral at NapieT yesterday afternoon was both -military and Masonic. All the Hawk-es Bay Masonic lodges were represented 'by membera, and in addition there -was a large number of individual members of the fraternity from other parts of New Zealand. Prior to the funeral, a lodge of eorrow was held in Hie Masonic lodge-Toom, the ceremonies in connection therewith being conducted by the Superintendent of Hawkes Bay. The funeral was (says a Press Association .telegram) probably tha largest that' has been seen in Napier. The sides of the streets en Toute were lined with people from both town and country, -who had attended to pay the last tribute of respect to one who had co endeared himself J ct > all. The services at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. C. L. Tuke and- th© Bishop of Waiapu. The Governor and Lady Plunket gave an "At Home" -at Government House yesterday afternoon.
