The unprecedented poorness of 'the result of the examination gave rise to much dissatisfaction throughout the several Institutes and on the part of the candidates. After discussion it was resolved by the Australian Institute to have a Post Examination in April, 1905, a decision which was arrived at rather late to enable New Zealand to join in, but in any case the Council decided that it would be inadvisable to do so. ' The result of the second examination was on a par with that of October, so that our decision was justified. These examinations has clealfc a serious, if not a death, blow to the Joint .Scheme. Victoria and Queensland have announced their withdrawal ; the New Zealand Council has decided not to join in an examination next October, but to leave decision as to its future policy until after tlie annual meeting. The Council appointed the Dunedin J,ocal Committee a special Committee to go through the papers of the New Zealand candidates at the October, 1904> examination and report. That Committee, after careful and exhaustive enquiry, has reported and copies of the report have been distributed amongsl members and sent to the Councils of the other Institutes. t The Council'ia-desiTous of working in com- ' plete harmony with the Students' Societies and welcomes from them the fullest expression of views, and opinions on accountancy matters. A most important matter has engaged the attention of the Council during the past year, viz., the promotion of a Bill before Parliament to make provision for the registration of accountants. In this matter the Council ' has worked hand-in-haad!with the New Zealand Accountants' and Auditors' Association. The Bill is now before the House, and is m charge of Mr. J. A. Millar, M.H.R., of 'Dunedm. The Institute has the" sum of £450 on fixed deposit and £57 5s 5d cash at bank, £9 19s 6d in hand, and no liabilities outs"de those in connection with the Accountants' Hill. The membership of the Institute at tho beginning of the year was 225, consisting of 100 Fellows, 53 Associates, and 72 Students. Of these, 1 Fellow, 1 Associate, and 17 Students went off the register for various reasons, and 3 Associates were promoted to the Fellowship under article 3A. The number admitted by examination was 33 — 2 Associate and 31 Students (one of the latter was already a member) ; one Fellow (a member of tht C.A. of England) -was admitted without examination.
