FIRE AT FOXTON.
[BY TELEGRAPH. — PRESS ASSOCIATION.] PALMERSTON N., Bth August. A destructive fire broko out at Foxton about 5.30 this evening in Wyatt, Clark, and Co/s rooms, and, spreading with); grsat rapidity', destroyed the Bank ofNew Zealand and the manager's dwelling attached on the south, and Chung Wah and Co.'s shop on 'the north. Haywood's Hotel and Walker's store wsro at one time in danger. The Church of England also nearly caught alight,,- but the bucket workers managed to restrict the area of the flames. Tho origin of the outbreak is uncertain, but it 'is said to be due to a defective chimney. All the bank documents, cash, etc., were got out caiely. The block burnt ds ono ot the oldest in Foxton. Fortunately, there was little or no wind, otherwise nearly all the town would probably have gone. This Day. The insurance on the stock in Walker's shop (which narrowly .escaped destruction) is £750 in the New Zealand office on building, and £250 in the National. The estimated loss on the stock is about £50. Tho damage to the building is considerable. Tho windows in the shops on the opposite side of the street were cracked by the heat, which also damaged the sido of All Saints' Church adjoining.
