TRAMWAY TO KILBIRNIE.

♦ THE NEW ROUTE. Yesterday we were able to announce that at a meeting of the Finance and Tramways Committees of the City Council it had been decided to make an alteration in the route of the tramway to Kilbirnie. The site of the tunnel is to be about one hundred yards further south than shown on the plan prepared by Mr. Wright, the late Electrical Engineer to the Council, and will be in a direct line with Pirie-street. The line is to start from Kent-terrace, go up Elizabeth-street, along Brougham-street, and into Pirie-street, thus avoiding the necessity for purchasing private properties in the vicinity of Rixon-grove, as would have been necessary had Mr. Wright's plans been carried out. The joint committees have also decided to recommend the Council that the line shall be continued from the present proposed terminus close to the Kilbirnie Hotel to the point at which the road to Miramar branches off, and that the Oriental Bay line shall be extended some distance- towards Point Jerningham, so as to meet the road which leads up to Roseneath.
