LOCAL AND GENERAL. « The House was mainly occupied yesterday in discussing the Old-age Pensions Act Amendment Bill, which passed its final stage after a long and futile debate. The Legislative Council discussed the question of a reversion to the old provincial method of government, ' and also dealt with an Auckland and a Taranaki measure. The amount which, the Messrs. Crawford have offered to contribute to the cost of an electric tramway between the city boundary and Seatoun if constructed by the Miramar Borough Council alone is £8000. The Council met last night and spent over two hours in considering tramway matters. The proceedings were not open to the press. The present position is that the Council has asked to be supplied with a_ rough draft of the proposed agreement in connection with the offer made by a syndicate to (1) construct a tramway and run it for a number of years, and (2) take over the ferry service, which it also undertakes to hand over to the borough at the end 1 of a. term of years. The Mayor (Mr. F. Townsend) informs us that the construction of an up-to-date tramway to Seatoun district is now assured. A statement was made at last night's meeting of 'delegates to the New Zealand Rugby Union" of the amount of debentures t-aken up to finance the tour of the football team to Enjgland. Mr. Wylie announced that the estimated cost of the tour was £6000, and the union wished to have £4000 in hand before the team left the colony. It was hoped to havu nearly £4000 ii> hand with the leceipts from the matches played in Australia, but there is little possibility of having more than this amount. The total amount of debentures and guarantees piomised and received to date is £1760 13s, and the actual receipts amount to £1058 3s. The gross gum. promised and received by the union is £3160 13s. The second rounds of the ladies' championships, Wellington Golf Club, were played at Miramar yesterday. The results were as follows: — Senior: Miss James beat Mrs. W. Bidwill, 1 up ; Miss Harcourb beat Miss I. Brandon, 4 up, 2 to play. Junior Championship. Miss Simpson beat Mis. Biss, 10 up and 8 to play ; Mrs. C. Bid-will beat Mrs. C. Pearoe, 6 up, 5 to play.
