THE BRESCIANS. The appearance of Wests Pictures and the Breiicians at the Town Hall last night, on removal from the Opera House, served to demonstrate the very large measure of popularity achieved by that combination. The large amount of accommodation provided at the hall was scarcely sufficient for the crowd that gathered there, and many had to be content with, standing room j>nly. The performance was, as usual, thoroughly appreciated. The pictures showed up well on the large screen, and one and all met with hearty applause, while aome provoked loudl outbursts of laughter. The musical programme provided by tho talented Brescians was decidedly good, and encores were the order of the evening. The programme will ba ■ repeated to-night. The funds of the Veterans' Home are likely to be materially assisted by a grand fancy dress baU which is being promoted with a new and attractive "feature in the shape of representative sets of lancers. The Town Hall has been secured, but the date has not yet been fixed! ; probably it will be about tie end of next month. A meeting of citizens will be convened at an eariy date to take up the project, the hope of the promoters being that the effort will be made as wide-spread and co-operative as possible. It is intended that the price shall be reasonable, and the dress circle of the Town Hall will be thrown open to spectators at a moderate fee. His Excellency tho Governor and Lady Plunket are taking a great interest in the project, and so far the following ladies have promised to each form a representative 6et : — Lady Phmket, Lady Ward, Mesdames Dr. Collins, Prof. Brown," Elgar, Fulton, and Hales, Misßea M. Blundell and Butt, Mrs. Tolhurst, Misses Reid and Miles, Misses Smith and Seed, Mrs. Johnston, of Fitz-herberi-tcrrace. In addition to these Wellington sets, representative sets from tho provinces will bo provided by the following :^-Palmerston North : Mesdames R. S. Abraham and Allan Strang ; Hawkes Bay, Mrs. Sidney Johnston and Miss Elsie Williams ; Rangitikei (hunting set), Mrs. D. G. Riddiford; Canterbury, Mrs. A. E. G. Rhodes. Tasteful schemes of costuming a-re promised, and the representative sets should make a pretty picture. There is room for a number more, and offers from Wellington or the provinces will be welcomed. Prizes donated by His Excellency will bo awarded to the ladies in the champion Bet, and it is proposed that the championship will be decided by vote of the spectators. Several other novelties are promifced. A social gathering and concert, in aid of the Catholic School, Thorndon, are advertised to be held in tho Sydneystreet .Schoolroom to-morrow evening. A very successful social evening of the Women's Social Club was held last night in Godber'e Rooms, Cuba-slreet. There was a large attendance of members, find songs were contributed by Mrs. Mark and Mies Schoch, pianoforte boloa by Mesdames Ducrow and Pike, a vio'.in s>olo by Miss Scharada, and fancy dancing by little Miss Peternen. Mr- W. 8. Campbell, Director of Agriculture, New South Wales, has in his office a sweet potato that weighs 151b. This fine specimen, big enough for a good-sized yam, was grown on the Olarenco River, near Maclean.
